University of Rwanda

Established in 2013 through the merger of seven public higher learning institutions, the University of Rwanda (UR) stands as the nation’s premier public university. With a commitment to academic excellence, research, and community engagement, UR plays a pivotal role in Rwanda’s socio-economic transformation.

Academic Structure

UR is organized into six specialized colleges:

  • College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS)
  • College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM)
  • College of Business and Economics (CBE)
  • College of Education (CE)
  • College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS)
  • College of Science and Technology (CST)

These colleges offer a diverse range of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, catering to over 30,000 students across various disciplines. 

Campus Network

UR operates a multi-campus system, strategically located to serve students nationwide:

  • Gikondo Campus (Kigali City): Business and Economics.
  • Nyarugenge Campus (Kigali City): Science, Engineering, and Technology.
  • Remera Campus (Kigali City): Medicine, Health Sciences, and Nursing.
  • Huye Campus (Southern Province): Arts, Humanities, Law, and Social Sciences.
  • Busogo Campus (Northern Province): Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.
  • Nyagatare Campus (Eastern Province): Agricultural Engineering and Business.
  • Rukara Campus (Eastern Province): Education and Inclusive Needs.
  • Rusizi Campus (Western Province): Business Studies.
  • Rwamagana Campus (Eastern Province): Nursing and Midwifery. 

Centers of Excellence

UR hosts several African Centres of Excellence, established in collaboration with the World Bank, focusing on:

  • Data Science (ACE-DS)
  • Biomedical Engineering and e-Health (CEBE)
  • Energy for Sustainable Development (ACEESD)
  • Internet of Things (ACEIoT)

These centers position UR at the forefront of research and innovation in the region.

Research and Innovation

As a leading research institution, UR emphasizes applied research addressing national and regional challenges. The university’s research initiatives span public health, environmental management, technology, and social sciences, contributing significantly to Rwanda’s development agenda.

Global Partnerships

UR maintains collaborations with international universities and organizations, enhancing academic exchange, joint research, and capacity building. Notably, partnerships with institutions like Michigan State University have led to joint programs in agribusiness and other fields.

UR offers a vibrant campus life, with various student organizations, sports, and cultural activities. Support services include academic advising, career guidance, counseling, and health services, ensuring a holistic student experience.
